All In The Same Storm: Patchwork Pandemic Stories is a project by The Refugee Buddy Project, founded by Chilean artist Rossana Leal, in collaboration with De La Warr Pavilion in East Sussex.

Between May and September of 2021, the exhibition: All In The Same Storm: Patchwork Pandemic stories created by The Refugee Buddy Project, was open to the public at De La Warr Pavilion in East Sussex. The work was a compilation of 95 patchwork squares sewn together in four large quilts, made by those seeking refuge in the country, volunteers, and people across the community who shared their experiences under the shadow of COVID-19 through sewing, applique and other textile arts techniques.

This exhibition is, as De La Warr Pavilion described it, “a people’s history of a pandemic that sits within the long tradition of hand-stitching as a method of narrating individual and collective life under oppressive, unsettling circumstances”.

Musician Simon James composed accompanying music to be played in the exhibition space. A piece called Patchwork created to be an invitation for viewers to slow down and reflect on the stories held in the quilts. Give it a listen below:
